Make your own homemade pumpkin pie spice blend with some familiar warm fall spices you most likely already have on hand.
There's a chill in the air and that means its time for pumpkin EVERYTHING!
Like it or not, fall is right around the corner and that calls for comfort food and warming spices and scents. Namely, pumpkin pie spice.
Pumpkin pie spice is a blend of warming spices that's used to flavor everything from pumpkin lattes, to pumpkin muffins, pumpkin quick bread to pumpkin pie.
Don't rush out to buy a jar of pumpkin pie spice, though.
I'm going to show you how you can make your own warming fall spice blend with spices you already have in your spice drawer, plus I'll share a few secret ingredients I like to add to my own custom blend.
Cinnamon | Ginger | Nutmeg | Cloves
A traditional pumpkin pie spice blend is made of cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg and usually includes allspice.
Allspice is actually a single spice, not a mix of spices as its name might suggest, but it actually tastes like a blend of cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves.
However, allspice is not quite as common as the other spices, so if you don't have any, you can substitute in ground cloves, as I have done in the recipe below.
Since there is already cinnamon and nutmeg in the recipe, the simple addition of some ground cloves will approximate the flavor of the allspice.
Homemade Pumpkin Pie Spice Blend
Whisk the spices in a medium bowl until well combined. Store in a small covered container and add to all your fall recipes!
Note | Feel free to play around and adjust the amounts of the various spices to your own specific taste. Or even try different spices. There's really no wrong way to combine them! It's what you ultimately like the taste of.
