There's nothing better than the smell of burgers sizzling on a grill in the backyard.
Here in Maine, we're pretty much limited to grilling during the few months of the year when there's not snow on the ground, but in many parts of the country, I know grilling is a year-round "sport".
Burgers, steaks, sausages, and hot dogs are, of course, the traditional grill fare, with vegetables and even fruits fair game for the more adventurous grillers. But did you know that you can grill eggs too?
How to Grill Eggs
I always like to keep some hard-cooked eggs on hand to snack on and these eggs cooked on the grill will add a smoky, savory flavor to the eggs whether you eat them as is, deviled or made into egg salad.
Hard-Cooked Eggs on the Grill
Next time you’ve got the grill fired up, rinse a few raw eggs under warm water, dry them, then use tongs to place them on the top rack (or along the edge of the grill) while you’re cooking your burgers or steaks.
Turn each egg once or twice with the tongs, and after about 10 minutes you’ll have hard-cooked eggs (or try reducing the grill time to 6-8 minutes for a more jammy yolk).
The eggs won’t peel all that easily if they’re fresh (although a dunk in a bowl of ice water should help), but they should have a great smoky flavor at least and they'll have nice grill marks on the whites!
Grilled eggs will make a fun side dish at your next cookout, even if you have to split them in half with a knife and dig the insides out with a spoon to eat them.
They're best for nibbling while you’ve already got the grill going, chopped up as topping on a salad, or for making into egg salad with some smoky flavor.
If the eggs crack and split open, no worries - they're still perfectly edible. Or you can poke a small hole in the shell with a pin before grilling to try to prevent cracking.
Fried Eggs on the Grill
You can also crack eggs into a greased cast iron skillet or even a greased muffin tin and set them on the grill rack with the grill covered for several minutes until the whites are set and the yolks are cooked to your liking.
